Why Kankakee River State Park Is My Favorite Place for Fall Family Photos

Every photographer has that one location they find themselves returning to year after year. For me, it's Kankakee River State Park.

When families ask for recommendations for their fall photo session, this beautiful park is almost always at the top of my list. The combination of winding trails, towering trees, open fields, and the scenic Kankakee River creates the perfect backdrop for timeless family portraits.

Fall is especially magical at the state park. As the leaves begin to change, the landscape transforms into a beautiful mix of gold, orange, and deep red tones. During golden hour, when the sun sits low in the sky, the light filters through the trees and creates a warm glow that simply can't be replicated anywhere else.

One of the reasons I love photographing families here is the variety. Within a short walk, we can capture images along wooded paths, near the river, in open grassy areas, and beneath colorful fall foliage. Every session feels unique, even though we're in the same park.
